Electric Callboy are very silly and produce excellent videos.
JBO, if you understand German.
My roommate introduced me to Electric Callboy and I agree. The best one imo (song/video combo) is maybe Pump It, or Spaceman.
Does Weird Al count? Because he is just as talented as any “serious” musician.
Also, The Presidents of the United States of America.
I was waiting for someone to say TPUSA. Their entire first album is basically the answer to this question.
And their second album. And their third…
just as talented
More so, arguably.
Way more so, and it’s not even an argument.
Unlike the other bands listed in this thread, Weird Al manages to rock even when he’s covering other musical genres!
Weird Al has literally done covers including style covers of many of the bands listed in this thread!
Presidents of the USA cover: Gump
They Might Be Giants style cover: Everything You Know Is Wrong
Devo style cover: Dare To Be Stupid
I’m sure there’s more, that’s off the top of my head.
There’s also songs that may have been initially inspired by a certain other artist but strayed far enough to be basically completely original, such as Albuquerque and (possibly my favorite Weird Al song of them all) Hardware Store.
Not to mention the polkas, which is what I really had in mind when I was talking about him making other genres rock.

Any time drummer Tré Cool takes the stage at a Green Day show, you’re in for a treat. Dominated Love Slave is his signature, but there’s also Like a Rat Does Cheese which is unreleased and All By Myself closes Dookie.
Tenacious D
Primus sucks
I will never stop being sad over when the Primus website stopped being primussucks.com for primusville or what the fuck ever.
Real heads remember that “Primus sucks” is the clarion call of people who fucking love Primus.
You are indeed correct, sir or madam or other.
Although with the explosion of new music styles, I’d argue that Primus needs its own actual categorization. Funk-Metal or something akin to that.
Psychedelic polka
Came here to say this. But as usual I came too late (except for intercourse, where it’s the opposite).
Devo
Super Furry Animals
Weird Al
Frank Zappa
I only know a couple singles, but I get the sense Primus is pretty wacky
Their lead instrument is a bass with guitar rythm
They Might Be Giants
I love how cheerful TMBG can make just about anything sound, regardless of- or maybe BECAUSE of subject matter. Except for them, I wouldn’t expect someone singing something like “I destroyed the bond of friendship and respect Between the only people left who’d even look me in the eye” to make me wanna dance
make me wanna dance
That’s how I feel about this:
Is he a dot? / Or is he a speck? / When he’s underwater does he get wet? / Or does the water get him instead?
Nobody knows / Particle Man
They’re just nerds, through and through. Music, science and history nerds, even.
They’ve also just always had good values. Their first show was at a Sandinista rally.
So many great quotes from that last link
They played to a crowd of about 30 people and were the only English-speaking band on the bill. Flansburgh: “We thought it would be a hippie gathering kind of thing, but it was actually a meeting of Sandinistas.”
The show was free, and ran from 12pm to 5pm. It was one of the hottest days of the year in New York City. The band’s next show took place seven months later, in the middle of a heavy snowstorm.

There is a lot of hip hop that fits this idea of great music with wacky lyrics.
Megan thee stallion, cardi b, and the like sing some raunchy songs.
Bbno$, yung gravy, lil dicky, flynt flossy and the entire turquoise jeep records collection of artists are humor-forward
Then theres czarface which has made many albums all about comic book characters.
Since you’re going outside the Rock genre with hip-hop, I’ll double down.
Here’s The Gourds with a bluegrass take on Gin and Juice.
It’s a damn fine performance, but the funniest part was that back in the days of Napster & Limewire, everyone just assumed that it was Phish covering the song.
Okay, unironically have you heard of Gangstagrass? They did the theme for Justified, and I think they’re based in Nashville, but they fuse bluegrass with hip-hop and goddamn does it sound amazing. It’s like purely American I love it.
Ah, that’s a good call!
I’m a big fan of Justified & looked Ganstageass up back during the original run, but have failed to keep up with them. Will have to catch up!
There’s also “SlamGrass” out there as a genre. I’ve only had the chance to see O’ Death, but I really dig their tune, “Only Daughter”.
Gangstagrass is very underrated.

Maybe Beck? Que’ Onda Guero always makes me giggle.
And, a bit of a different genre but Father John Misty’s songs are sarcastic and often nonsensical. They sound all romantic and dreamy but the lyrics don’t always match the vibe.
I thought of another one. That band Bloodhound Gang has some goofy songs. Obviously they have that one over-played song, but they also have a song that is just Ralph Wiggins quotes.
Beck is a tough one because he does have a lot of goofy songs, but they’re mixed in with ones that are strange and surreal but less goofy.
Debra is a great example of a funny Beck song.
Girl I want to get with you / Only you / And your sister / I think her name is Debra
Lady, step inside my Hyundai
Man, that’s just wacky to see those bands in one sentence in reference to rocking and being silly. You’re not wrong.
One of my favorites - Frank Zappa’s Apostrophe / Overnight Sensation.
Bloodhound Gang, Blink 182, Sum 41, Sublime, Men Without Hats, They Might Be Giants, Tenacious D, Ugly Kid Joe, Green Jelly / Jello, The Dead Milkmen, Dee Lite, Squeeze.
Piling on here… One size fits all is an excellent intro album to Zappa for the uninitiated!
How is Tenacious D not plastered all over the comments!?
If you’re going to mention Frank Zappa you also have to mention “Sheik Yerbouti” and “Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch” by him.
Don’t forget “Muffin Man”
Have you checked Nanowar (of steel) which is parodic metal ?
My favourite was the one about the ECB declaring war on the tooth fairy https://youtu.be/CzvQxQYKO88?si=syo-DYB2sHD5V79u
