Where would you move to ride out a potential WWIII?
The Canary Islands.
I like tropical, and it’s Spain, so part of the western world.
Just click your heels together three times, Dorothy. You’ll find all the fascism you need right in your own backyard!
You didn’t need old fascism. the real fascism was inside you all along.
My crazy mom says she’s looking to move to Uruguay because when the nukes start falling they will most likely not have a ton of fallout to deal with.
I’m gonna run toward the light in that kind of scenario, personally. Nature will rebuild. In a WWIII scenario, the winner is evolution. Life will, uh, find its way.
It’s five and I’m driving home again
It’s hard to believe that it’s my last time
The man on the wireless cries again
“It’s over, it’s over”
It’s late and I’m with my love alone
We drink to forget the coming storm
We love to the sound of our favorite song
Over and over
Dancing, with tears in my eyes
Weeping for the memory of a life gone by
Dancing, with tears in my eyes
Living out a memory of a love that died
Don’t you do this to me, lemmy689. Don’t you hurt me with your heartfelt soliloquys and your lustful eyes
Behind the Bastards had a Christmas special non-bastard episode on the Tupamaros of Uruguay and Pepe Mujica. It does seem like they have some decent politics there.
Depends, are we riding out the rise of fascism or riding out WWIII? Those are two highly different scenarios.
Either way, a Pacific island sounds nice.
Not with rising sea levels
Fair. A boat anchored at a Pacific Island, while they exist.
Maybe I’ll dock at the Pacific garbage patch and distill my fuel from microplastics.
I think I am stuck in Texas
A proto-Waterworld scenario!
No gills for me, sadly.
The Pacific Garbage patch isn’t solid enough to dock on.
Also, Pacific atolls will be fucked, but high islands will be fine.
Okay, Newfoundland.
Totally agree, but you really never know where would be insulated from everything
I mean surely in the 1930s Hawaii felt like an excellent place to be insulated from war…
Ever read the book On the Beach?
Closest I’ve read is Lord of the Flies.
Hah very different themes I’d say.
On the Beach is about all the people who thought it’d be a good idea to move to Australia in case all the nukes drop during the Cold War, and then the nukes drop and everyone in the northern hemisphere dies and they survive, but then they realize they’re just waiting for the natural wind patterns to bring all the radiation over to them to kill them too. The only way to win is not to play.
So similar in that they’re both very dismal.
I read a short story with a very similar theme, could have been that book.
If I were to stay in the U.S., I’d probably go to Hawaii, probably Maui or Lanai.
Hawai’i will be a main base of operations for strategic command and targeted as a result. The islands are crawling with the US military and then there is the naval installation at Pearl Harbor. If I had to go with an island in the chain though, I would choose Moloka’i. That is if the locals would have me. They are more self sustaining there.
I recommend against Hawaii. It’s not exactly self sustaining since there are too many people living there. Housing/rent is crazy high so there are many homeless. Everything is much more expensive. Jobs can be hard to find. The islands are sinking. Storms still hit every season. Depending on the island, you may be dealing with volcanic eruptions and vog. And I do believe their coral reefs are bleaching. It sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Then factor in the locals, they only want locals living there and to restore their Hawaiian Kingdom, #GoHomeHaole. Best to pick somewhere else.
Oh I agree. I don’t belong there being the primary reason I wouldn’t, among others you listed. I love it there and I have long term generational personal connections, but out of respect, I would not choose to live there. Aloha I ko’u 'Ohana.
There are no military bases on maui. Just a few armories and a small national guard station.
We will know the best place after whatever event happens. It’s always hard to predict these things with so many variables.
Bold to presume that we would want to survive it.
Fwiw Musk says that he wants to leave Earth and go to Mars, which is great news for the rest of us:-).
It’s not. The story about mars allowed Musk to build the rockets to launch the StarLink satellites.
Given the preparation for war with China, can we exclude that those satellites carry payloads to take down intercontinental missiles?
Otherwise the USA could feel safe and be willing to engage in a nuclear war.
To be fair, in Musk’s fantasy Mars is the easier planet to live on.

East Africa. I just like the idea.
I’m one of the lucky ones! Because of my service to our great country fighting against those dirty communists, when the bombs fall my family and I will be safe and sound, underground, in one of the local vaults in our area: Vault 108!
Oh shit… I just realized that it’s only a matter of time until Musk starts building vaults. Probably with a much worse name like vaultX
Dude that’s a long since passed look at the vaults in Hawaii with zuck. I hope they choke down there. Remember they all have air filters.
It will be a boring name.
He’s more likely to call it Deus Vault
X Dungeon
Xault
Nomadic life makes the most sense, just figure out your mode(s) of transportation.
I’ve given some thought to a sailboat, as I love sailing.
I was looking into boats for a moment, all the legalities were too much of a learning curve for me, but there’s a lot of water out there.
Something like this would be ideal, though I don’t have the $7M+ one of these probably cost. Really fast too. Can hit 30kts and sail at or above wind speed with winds above 5mph. You could cover 200-400 nautical miles per day.
Realistically, I want a Seawind 1160. Unfortunately, I’ve been keeping an eye on prices for used ones since before the pandemic, and they never seem to get any cheaper. 🙁
Seems like a great choice, and not a bad price.
I had Uruguay and New Zealand on my list.
If you go to New Zealand, you’ll have to deal with the shithead billionaires there who will have moved there a few days ahead of you, (since they’ll get extra warning of course), who will have moved already into the fortress-bunkers they’ve been making for a decade or so there.

https://www.massivemagazine.org.nz/articles/9ifugmdie5ofe1utd1bgsw4zascn61
It should be a life mission of anyone in New Zealand, when the time comes, to find out where their air systems reach the surface and throw a few grenades down the ducts. For the good of humanity (whatever’s left).
I think the billionaires probably have given it a bit of forethought. On the positive side they’re an English speaking nation, and my Spanish is mid at best.
Argentina probably. Generally the southern hemisphere is pretty safe. Nobody’s wasting nukes on brown people, except maybe Israel.
Wouldn’t bet on argentina. They’ve got their own dickhead in chief who’s also waging war against progress.
Yeah, it may not be the best choice, but not the worst either. They’re not much of a threat to the big powers, and if they just stay out of it they’ll probably come through fine.
You’ve got a lot more faith in the system than I do, I think. I don’t think people like Milei wouldn’t coup if a global conflict that strained trade routes were to happen. Authoritarians like him don’t need much prodding to take advantage of a bad situation.
Big hypothetical, ik, but it wouldn’t surprise me if people like him leaned on fascist legacy.
Most Americans have no idea how historically similar the US and Argentina actually were. It’s honestly weird that Argentina’s similar circumstances didn’t turn it into a great power like the US.
I think we should go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over.
All well and good until you turn up to see Farage posing with a pint.
you’d certainly be able to have a freer conversation than on .ml
it seems a balance of -15 people don’t believe me. do you think i should explain?
I’m put of the loop on this.
I know ml are tankies but what has happened in the last few days?
Somewhere in South America. Always wanted to go the Falklands. In reality I don’t have the money for that. So I’m here on this hell ride to the bitter end.
If the world goes to shit and the UK is fighting with Russia, would Milei try to grab the Falklands?
