Afternoon everyone,
I wanted to go over a few points related to pricing, stats and the roadmap
Pricing
-
Sync for Lemmy is completely free with ads (the same as Sync for Reddit)
-
You can remove ads in the account picker or drawer for a one time fee of ~$20
-
Sync Ultra also removes ads but it’s not required
-
I’ll be working on regional prices over the coming weeks
There are now 24k installed users up from 100 the previous day!
I’m going to be spending the next few days going through all of the comments / messages and fixing any crashes.
As always thanks for the support and hope you’re liking Sync!
Lj
Edit: testing edit
I’m probably dumb, but I can’t find how to change the size of the font of the post. I also noticed that is the same size of the one I am using typing this message.

I don’t know why but I don’t have a selftext font option.

I tried but it only works with slides and cards, when I switch back to small cards the self text has the default font. As a workaround I changed the base font and adjusted the relative size of post and comments fonts.

I’m all on board with FOSS, but I used sync for reddit for years, ljdawson has my support on Lemmy too. I don’t mind supporting a good dev. Do I prefer things be FOSS? Yeah, but I have no issues using a closed source product if it works. And sync has always been top notch. Responsive dev, all around good product.
I’m with you, I just wish pro was a separate app because I hate all the data collection garbage.
The dev is also in England where the cost of living is skyrocketing. For me $20/yr for a staple app on my phone that’s constantly being updated is totally reasonable.
Settings shortcut: Settings > Remove ads
You might have to update to see it
Please add regional pricing. It’s currently ₺650 to remove ads. Considering Forza Horizon 5, a triple A title that costs $60 normally is priced at ₺600, the current pricing is just too much for anything but the NA and EU.
Point 4 in my post ^
Yup, just saw it, thanks!
What currency is that?
Turkish Lira
Ah, yeah. You guys are having a rough time to say the least right now. Hope you get the adjusted currency sorted.
Thanks so much for your hard work! I can only contribute through ads, but plan on going ultra when I’m able.
I hope that, when you look through comments, you don’t take the negative ones too seriously. You’ve done so much for us. I hope you’re proud. :)
Just voicing my support for the work you’ve done so far and am happy to pay the $20. Honestly I was a little taken aback at first sight but thinking about how many years of service I got with the reddit app I’m happy to support the developer. I’ll reiterate what I saw another commenter say and it would be nice if a small portion of the fee was used towards to the support of Lemmy as a whole as well. I want to see this continue and flourish. Thanks again to the developer for one smooth app.
I was taken a back by the prices at first too and I’ve made many comments how I still feel it’s expensive, but bought it anyways because I am a long time user of Sync. I was mostly concerned about being able to convince others to buy it.
But the more I think about it, I feel it’s deserved and I won’t really complain about it anymore. It’s such a great app and has earned it over the years. I still can’t believe it’s here on Lemmy. My brain really feels at home again. It’s the good ol’ days again.
Yeah, have to admit that despite my initial shock at the price of ad-free, if I think of it as a back payment for over a decade of Sync Pro, even though I bought it a few times to support LJ’s fantastic work.
But I also agree that if LJ is bumping it up by a thousand percent, I’d be happier if some of it was going to Lemmy World.
I’m sold, buying ad free now
For those who are a bit skint, just install NextDNS, it’s free and blocks the ads
One thing I didn’t see mentioned yet: I quite liked the “go to random NSFW subreddit” function in the old app.
Would be cool to see that function again.
I’m going to be building a service that adds the random / random nsfw functionality back.
If this service could automatically discover and connect an unfederated remote community to your home instance in the background and then just show it to you in the frontend it would be unbelievable.
Awesome.
Seeing how Lemmy is open source it would be worthwhile to see if there’s a way to build random/randomnsfw into Lemmy itself.
Oh thank you! It’s weird speaking publicly about pornography habits, but this single feature is probably the most responsible for the diversity of content I’ve consumed, I really love it!
You’re right, it’s weird.
- I’ll be working on regional prices over the coming weeks
Glad to hear that, until then I don’t mind the ads. They don’t make me wait to see a post or hindering anything.
Loving the app so far. Is there anyway to view communities by size? My instance has a “communities” page that shows local and all communities by user count. Is this on the roadmap?
Not currently but sounds like a good addition
You did a great job! No bugs to report yet.
I never used sync for Reddit, I was (and remain in my heart) a die hard RIF user. I appreciate the work you’ve done so much and more than ANYTHING the ability to have multiple columns again. It’s sync for me now.

There’s no clear way to look at all, there’s an “everything” but it’s not clear if that’s classified as “all” like other Lemmy apps
I have sync for Reddit but I won’t be paying $130+ CAD for ultra, especially when sync for Reddit cost me less than $10
Ultra pricing was similar for reddit IIRC. Removing ads is $20, Sync for Reddit Pro was cheap years ago, this is different
No it definitely wasn’t the same, sync pro has always been cheap, and even when I check it now it’s close to $10.
Now he wants to charge $130 for an ultra. Okay.
Everything = all
Everything and all appear to be synonymous when compared to the default web browser.
Everything=all but there is a Lemmy oddity here.
Everything shows everything for all the communities subscribed to by anyone on your instance. So it might be different from one instance to another because the users have subscribed to different sets of communities.
It’s likely to be a small difference between two big instances (lots of users so most communities will have at least one subscriber), but if you self host an instance it’ll be pretty useless.
The backlash has surprised me a bit. I agree the price is a bit steep but considering the userbase is only a fraction of what Reddit has, it’s understandable that the price would be higher.
I just didn’t expect such negative reactions to either the ad component or the price. A lot have mentioned that it could become a form of gatekeeping for newcomers. I just hope it won’t turn out that way.
$5 for the 8 years I used Sync for Reddit is cheap as fuck looking back. $20 is totally fair if I use this app even half as long.
Seriously. I got absolutely massive return for my money on Reddit sync. As a long time user, I’m absolutely thrilled to pay $30 for such a great experience. Nothing else I’ve paid for even comes close. This is cheap AF! I’m not a big fan of subscriptions but I’d consider getting the Sync subscription just to keep supporting ljdawson.
But weren’t the 5$ ultra? And not the non add option? Just wondering can’t remember the sync for reddit app prices.
$5 was just for the lifetime ad free version. Sync Ultra was more expensive because it had more features, like being able to see deleted comments (there are more but I don’t remember them)
All the backlash comes from the elitists that have been using Lemmy before the reddit API change, and I guarantee everybody will shut up about it in a week or so.
Lemmy users when reddit users transfer over: omg welcome to our humble little boards! Feel free to use it however you desire!
Lemme users when a developer makes an app for it: NO YOU FUCKING WORTHLESS MORON YOU’RE SELLING YOUR SOUL $20 IS MORE THAN I’VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE AND YOU WANNA THROW IT AWAY??? THIS WEB APP THAT HAS NO ANIMATIONS AND NO FEATURES AND RUNS LIKE SHIT IS THE BEST AND ANYBODY WHO ARGUES WITH ME IS A SHILLLLLLLLLLLLL
I have not read a single comment anywhere on Lemmy on any post about Sync that takes it to the highly exaggerated level you made it out to be. On the contrary, I have seen many many users express appreciation to the dev and acknowledge how well the app is designed, but respectfully voice their surprise at the unusually high cost to remove ads. Just because a person thinks $20 for an app is a bit steep, doesn’t mean they think the dev is a “FUCKING WORTHLESS MORON”.
They’ve mostly stopped but there were a handful of people who were acting like the sync dev shot their children.
I paid $30 for a launcher (Niagara). It was worth it. I’ll give Sync a few days and will probably end up throwing down some cash. Seems solid so far.
Niagara costs like six bucks to buy?
Niagara Pro is $10 per year or $30 one time.
Oh, interesting. Nice to know that, thank you!
I had not used Sync for Reddit as I was a Boost user but now that I’ve installed Sync for Lemmy I’m enjoying it. It’s very polished, smooth and easy to use. I think it will great once it’s feature complete.
In a way you have a headstart over the other new apps and it shows. I’m sure rewriting the back end is not fun but at least your already had the UI.
I think the pricing model is fair. Free with ads for those who want to try it, one time fee for those who don’t like subs, and a low cost sub for power users.
Send like most people have an issue with €20. Perhaps they were expecting €10 but that’s less than €1 per month in just the first year, nevermind all future updates. €20 seems fair for a lifetime unlock.
I was lurking in the comments here to see if other Boost users are going to Sync since we don’t have Boost for Lemmy yet. I’m going to wait and see what happens before I support one of them with my wallet, but so far Sync is clean and intuitive.
I think the pricing is fair too. I’m just doing some quick math.
-
24k users on day one
-
if they all paid 16$ for a year that would be $384k a year
-
if just 1% of that user base buys sync for a year that’s 38k a year ($3200 before any taxes or other costs)
-
potential donations to lemmy (2 of the $16 dollars) cuts down to $2800 a month
-
cost for infrastructure to run the app is unknown but it comes out of that $2800 for the app subscribers.
In this 1% case, that is not a lot of money.
With an app of this calibur, if there are more subscribers we would see rapid growth as it’s still in its early days an needs more subscribers. Apps stagnate when they hit their growth limit.
I think you’ll get the most on your return on investment if you choose to pay. SYNC is a great app and I will gladly pay for continued development.
Note: I also do think that ads are imorral. If sync made enough off subscribers to provide an experience without ads to free users I think it should be considered.
-
Loving the app, I was also an avid boost user but I’ve been really enjoying Sync! One feature I’d like to suggest is moderator actions, I’ve installed (what I think is) ever android Lemmy app and none of them have any moderator support. Having this feature would immediately be a big pull to anybody who moderates a community and would greatly help moderating from mobile.
