I would love the child of a Surfacebook with a Framework laptop; or A bare keyboard attached to a screen, that I could plug my phone (possibly running Phosh) and use it as a hardware for a laptop experience
A modern Steam Machine console/PC. I just got the Steam Deck and I love it, but it’s roughly PS4 power. I want a PS6 with the same or better SteamOS build that the Steam Deck has. I want simple modular upgradability. I want it to come with a controller that’s basically the Steam Deck without the screen, but with the comfort of a dualsense. I want to have a device that can replace both my PS5 and my laptop from 2015. I want the freedom and multitasking of PC with the standardization and comfort of console, updated to this decade.
I mean, technically you could build it yourself and just use PS/X controllers. I know it’s a lot more work than just buying it premade but at least you could fulfill your own dream in the meantime.
I’m very interested in doing that, actually! I’m not sure I could do it in a small enough form factor to be what I want without sacrificing power and risking overheating, but I could probably build something bigger that’s good to put down on the floor by the tv (no carpet).
Something like the Gvido E-Ink tablet for working with sheet music, but without all the proprietary bullshit and closed software.
It’s not the double screen form factor but Onyx Boox are e-ink android tablets
I know about the Boox devices, but the double screen is the main selling point for me. As far as I know, there’s nothing similar offered by any other manufacturer out there. The PadMu comes close, but it’s two separate devices (no hinge) that you have to pair via Bluetooth and place side by side, and the pairing process is slow and cumbersome.
Given that the PadMu is (as far as I can tell) a tweaked Onyx - I’m not clear what the difference actually is? Onyx can do sheet music can’t it?
Well yes, any E-Ink device should be able to open a PDF, but PadMu gives you the ability to sync two devices so you can place them next to each other and display two pages at once. I think it has additional features specifically for working with sheet music, like an infra-red sensor for turning pages by waving your hands in front of the device. I know the Gvido has that (Edit: But the PadMu actually doesn’t; it’s all software enhancements and the dual display mode).
This review showcases the side-by-side display (double mode) feature at around 4:20. Can Onyx devices do that? I haven’t checked, but my guess is no.
If the main difference is the dual screen thing then it’s not much use for me. My main use case with sheet music is writing it, not reading for performance - so I’d actually prefer to work on just one screen at a time.

I really want an e-ink tablet that is good for both sheet music and has excellent ebook support. Including Kindle formats. I’m not holding my breath.
Something extremely modular and upgradable like the Framework, but with a 4K 120Hz HDR OLED display, that can fold back into 2-in-1 mode and that has connectivity for full bandwidth of an external GPU. Additionally, some way to connect to up to 3 displays at full 48Gbps HDMI 2.1 bandwidth (each) - at least - DP 2.1 would be even better. Maybe via multiple display outputs or some insanely-high-bandwidth port like Thunderbolt 5 for dock connectivity.
The intent is to basically have a tablet-to-laptop-to-desktop experience, with virtually no compromises.
Regular looking glasses with live captioning. We get close but it always seems just out of reach.
I’ve done it few times (with Google Glass, Glass2, Vuzix Blade, Monocle) relatively easy to do but the latency IMHO is what makes it unusable.
Ah that’s frustrating. The XRAI looked promising, but it’s bulkier than I can wear and my phone isn’t compatible with it.
Brain implant that puts me in any world other than this one. Preferably with cute anime girls involved.
It’s called fantasy
Yep, That’s the point.
It exists
It’s not the same but I suppose you could try VR lol
Yeah that’s basically VRChat
A mute button for people.
Black Mirror
aka headphones
Or a gun
Easy to mute but harder to unmute.
Unmuting wasn’t in the original specs
Fair
If nobody else wants it, I guess I’ll claim the time machine. With a money printer on the front, please. Thanks!
Wot’s dis, then? Future laddie printing counterfeits? Blokes like you make me sick, they do. Roight, you’re coming down to Scotland Yard to answer a few questions, then.
A DVR but for dreams.
I feel like there was a Built to Spill song about that.
I would love to have an open, hackable, linux-based eBook reader.
reMarkable, open-ish but runs Linux and active dev community
The older Kindles are basically this. Most of their software it runs on are shell scripts under the hood.
Isn’t there a project for that is working on that concept?
Edit: Found it! It’s called openbook
PineNote exists too, though it’s often out of stock. Remarkable tablet has a pretty decent hacking community, and gives you its root password in settings. Kobo devices have been able to run aftermarket software for years, and recently there’s been progress in booting a complete OS. If you’re okay with Android there are even more choices. @crunchpaste@lemmy.dbzer0.com you’ve got some options!
Now that we’re on the topic, an idea for an eCafe where there are plenty of physical books, but you can plug in the reader to a machine to fully download the book so you can read it offline.
I think I want to learn more about coding and find a bunch of leftist buddies and make shit that’s actually “innovative”.
A direct clone of the Switch JoyCon that works seamlessly on PC and PS5.
A version of the ASUS ROG Flow that is about 20% lighter and has about 50% better battery life when not in dGPU mode.
A version of the MiSTer and/or Analogue Pocket with RetroAchievements support.
Yeah, I’m a weird gamer.
You can use the Joycons with a PC using One of these
Apparently you can’t with the 8bitdo adapter (sorry made last post while half asleep) meant to link the mayflash NS2 which actually can pair both joycons
will link that here and change previous link in case someone comes across it later
Looks like this shows it working with both joycons on a miniature laptop on the ns1 https://youtube.com/watch?v=aJU606gw-NM&pp=ygUVbWFnaWMgbnMgMiBqb3ljb25zIHBj
From the comments under the video these look to be the instructions to pairing both joycons to it
HERE IS WHAT YOU ACTUALLY DO:
1: Go to the Green mode.
2:Press the button once or twice untill the green led on the mayflash blinks really fast.
3:Hold the power button and the “hidden bumper thingy button” that is FURTHEST away from the controller until the controller either stops blinking or resets the lights. Do this for the one of the two controllers.
4:Repeat step 2 and 3 for the other controller (as in press the mayflash button until it blinks really fast), you will notice that the paired controller has shutdown and you can now do 3 to pair the other controller.
5:Press the mayflash button 2 times again so that it goes into fast blinking ( now all controllers have shutdown ).
6:While blinking press the power button on the LEFT joycon. Wait for it to pair with a solid green LED.
7:The mayflash must be now solid green and the left joycon too with the right NOT connected. GOOD … just press the mayflash button again so that it goes into SLOW BLINK and when it does hit any button on the RIGHT joycon AND IT WILL PAIR AT THE SAME TIME AS THE LEFT. CONGRATS

I can’t imagine wanting joycons over an xbox controller for my console/controller gaming but I guess someone was bound to love the joycons lol
Well, your wrists don’t try to murder you if you keep them bent at an angle for too long, I suppose. Human hands are different, and mine really like having two separate controllers instead of holding just one thing.
But also, the JoyCons are pretty awesome, I find the separate button d-pad very reliable and I don’t have a problem with the size at all, so even if they weren’t healthier for me I’d love to have a set that works natively on PC.
You should try getting into VR gaming!
I have multiple HMDs and controllers. The original Vive controllers are maybe the least ergonomic thing I own, and the current standard does not feature a full array of face buttons.
Plus, obviously, they don’t work on flatscreen games. So yeah, no, the JoyCon is still the best controller out there right now, VR knuckles included.
Hey man no judgment haha
Raspberry pi in a Cisco WIC card form factor.
A robotic AI pet. Like a small dog or cat. Preferable able to read my body language and react to it. In a low price range that I can afford. Everything on the market is too dumb, too expensive, too hard to program and there is non that can read body language.
Great for people who like pets but either are allergic or germophobe or just not able to get a non robotic pet for whatever reason

Give me a normal good smartphone with a 100mm OLED display that I can use with one thumb and I’ll never have another want in this world. The iPhone 4 was fine
Then just use an iPhone 4
Very dated specs, no software compatibility, probably no carrier support, if you got it to connect to the internet it would be highly insecure from years of no updates. Tragically it’s very much not an option
Fine, get a Fire Phone
Just carry your own landline with you at that point then
It’s newer than the iPhone 4.
I’ve generally found the one-handed utilities on iOS and Android to be inconvenient and they don’t help me well enough with horizontal stretches
(yes I really want a tiny phone)
