Yeah. I search for things all the time. Thousands of searches each month. I thought I’d miss it a lot, but I’ve not used Google for two years or so and it’s not really a problem.

Google is mostly adverts. Wouldn’t take much to be better than that.

Not exactly in my language, but Lipton used to have an advert for their ice tea “Limone” in Japan. A lady sing a jingle, and in the middle of it she’d exclaim 「おいちい」, meaning “delicious.” However, 「ちい」could also be interpreted as the English word tea. Thus an appropriate translation of the pun would be “tealicious.”

Oh my gods, the mess that is Teams. When I first started working at my current company I was kind of excited because all of the software just works together. It felt novel, and I was enchanted by it. That quickly died when I realised that it makes finding anything a nightmare. There’s a billion different tabs and solutions for every single individual thing, and even multiple things within the same project. I think the main project I work on has like fifteen different test documents, and good luck trying to find the documentation for pushing stuff live! The only real way to find things is to ask someone who knows. There’s half a billion different search bars and finding the right one is just way too time consuming.

Yeah, forums please. I hate the idea of troubleshooting information being locked behind some stupid software we can’t easily index and search. Forums can be put on archive.org, you can literally print a page, or save it as a PDF for reviewing later. You can make use of bookmark software like Linkwarden to archive things.

Discord? Not so much. You can use third party software to scrape it and save information, but no search engine can index it. Community building is great, but I loathe having to trawl through tonnes of blithering blathering conversation BS just to figure out where to find firmware for a particular chip I have is.

Makes me want to projectile vomit all over the place, throw my computer out the window, and move to convent.

Depending on what you aim to do, Matrix works well enough. Reminds me a lot of Discord back in 2017 or so.

To be fair, some of our walls are a bit more hollow, and can be easily drilled into. I wonder if they’re more or less drywall. Though I don’t think you could punch through them without hurting yourself. There’s this part of me that now wishes to try, but it’s like as best we don’t find out. 😅

You can buy portable camping stoves that use propane as well. If your kitchen cant heat enough, then that is a useful tool to have. Honestly I’d say it’s decently useful overall in case of a blackout or something.

IKEA. It’s stainless steel with non-stick. It’s the only non-stick thing I have, and I’m desperate to be rid of it.

Having a non-stick wok is incredibly frustrating because it doesn’t handle high temperatures, and a lot of recipes I’d like to do require high temperatures. Like good luck trying to make chili oil in this thing, I have to use a regular stainless steel pot for that - which works fine. I like making Cantonese style scrambled eggs which isn’t really possible in a pot and it doesn’t come out right in the wok since you can’t heat it enough, meaning the egg doesn’t set fast enough.

I don’t think drywall is a thing in apartments here. Growing up I always thought that “punching through the wall” was something they put in for comedic effect, because here you’d just crush your hand.

Weirdly, a dough scraper. It’s not because of the measurement conversions, I don’t think I’d ever noticed them up until now actually. It’s just a really solid dough scraper. I use it for dough, but I’ve also used it for so many other things, like assembling/disassembling furniture, patching holes in the wall, wrapping furniture in a vinyl sheet. Loads of various tasks.

Every so often you find that you need a solid, flat, steel thing, and this comes in handy every single time.

Yeah, the way I see it; if you buy a fancy kitchen knife or two, you better also buy whetstones and learn how to sharpen properly. Those knives can be great, but they also need good care.

If you buy the cheapo IKEA knife set of 3 for $12, you might as well use a rubbish sharpener. It’ll do the job, and the knives are borderline disposable. The lifetime of them won’t really matter much in the grand scheme of things.

Well, from a personal perspective as a developer, maintaining an app that’s scraping another website for data doesn’t sound like a lot of fun. It’s not exactly enticing to put a lot of effort into something that could be broken on a whim.

A lot changed after Satya Nadella took the helm. The modern .NET platform is really quite nice, and MS does a lot of FOSS open source work.

Obviously it’s good to be sceptical, they’re a large corporation and all they want is money, they’re not our friends. They’re just not as draconian as they were in the 90s and the 00s.

Think that depends on which country you’re in as well as the type of company you’re registering.

I’ve had people like you describe in my life, it’s not fun to find out that people you thought you get along really well with actually can’t stand you. Conversely, I also don’t want anyone in my life that treats me like crap even though they don’t intend to do so. Obviously there’s a nuance, if someone says something off to me once, or does something that hurts me once that’s something you can work through.

I’ve friends that are chronically bad at keeping times, and frequently turn up late when we plan things. I stop hanging out with them because when we talk about it and I express that keeping time is something I find very important, and they keep being late over and over again despite saying that they’ll do better, I feel like my time and feelings on the matter are unimportant to them. They might not intend to waste 5 hours of my time every time we make plans, but eventually I’m bound to get fed up, no?

In such a scenario perception is important.

Given how rubbish the software is you can absolutely forego it and download new drivers manually.

I was having no end of troubles when installing Linux on my machine recently.

The hardware was too new. I’d gone with the latest LTS of Ubuntu, and it didn’t really jive with my stuff. 23:04 works like a charm though.
