@zerbey@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•My cat(s) likes to sit in front of the space heater?English3•1YAs the old saying goes, if you are cold go find the cat. She’s already found the warmest spot in the house. My childhood cats used to fight over a hammock we had hanging over one of the radiators, it never ceased to amaze me how long they’d spend in that thing and the heat never bothered them. If you are concerned kitty is going to burn herself, invest in a fire guard which is a mesh barrier usually used to stop toddlers getting to the fire but is also effective for curious cats.
George W Bush certainly caused more deaths, was just as decisive and is the reason Trump was allowed to happen. OK, so he’s got a bit more of a charming personality and gives Michelle Obama candy sometimes, but that doesn’t absolve him. Doesn’t absolve Trump either, he’s a loud mouthed buffoon who tried to start a Civil War. He has followers who will literally do anything he tells them to do. The idea of him having a second term absolutely terrifies me.

I got very lucky in that regard. My community college for my BTEC, same, the one teacher who taught me how to properly write reports and assignments was really good at ensuring we cited everything properly, and gave extra marks.
@zerbey@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Lemmings who know where/when they contracted COVID, how long after your exposure did you become symptomatic?English2•2YMy wife caught it at work, about six months into the pandemic. Was inevitable, since she works in a grocery store. She woke up with a fever and no sense of taste or smell, and then went downhill with really bad flu like symptoms from there. I started with the same thing the next day. Main illness lasted two weeks, but the worst part was the first week by far. My wife was sick for almost 6 weeks and ended up on an inhaler for a while until her lungs healed. Neither of us got our full taste back for almost 2 years, and our smell hasn’t fully recovered yet either (about 80% now).
We both tested positive again last June, got a mandatory week off work but the only symptom was a mild fever. Wouldn’t have even known I was sick, but a family member tested positive and we’d been to visit so took a test and there I was. I’d been vaccinated by that point, so I’m going to go out on a limb and say the vaccination did what it was supposed to do with keeping me from being sick.
@zerbey@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How long did you have to wait before retaking your drivers test?English2•2YSaid I could come back the next day, as it turned out I was busy that day so I passed the following day instead. I failed because I got over confident backing out of a parking spot an nudged a cone. Or, as he put it, I murdered a toddler. Fair enough. We did the backing up thing first so I could get that out of the way, the rest of the test was easy.
I’ve never heard of a weird secret code to force you to fail, just relax and don’t run over any toddlers, I mean cones, and I’m sure you’ll be just fine!
@zerbey@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the most expensive thing you've eaten? Was it worth it?English12•2YOn our honeymoon, we went to this 5 star place in Scotland so I could “wine and dine” my new wife. I think the meal ended up being $150 back in 2000 so about $260 now. We both had the lamb and vegetables, the lamb was under cooked and the vegetables were practically raw. The dessert, on the other hand, was delicious and we got drunk on a bottle of wine. We had more fun listening to the group of older guys one upping each other with tales of their yachts. They were also very welcoming to a couple of young kids who were clearly in a place far above their income bracket. So, in all, it was crap food but we enjoyed ourselves.
@zerbey@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Gamers, how much storage does your PC/console have?English2•2YOn my regular desktop PC? 1.5TB spread between three drives, not using half of it. My NAS has 4TB and I’m using about 80% of it so will need to upgrade that at some point. For a supposed IT professional I really don’t use that much storage.
Probably another 2TB or so spread among the various servers and Raspberry Pis I have kicking around the place, but none of them are used for anything important.
@zerbey@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Have you ever been under general anesthesia? What was it like? Did anything strange happen?English3•2YWith general anesthesia nothing really, I remember them pushing the meds and a strange sensation as they did so, then the next thing I know I’m being wheeled back to recovery. All times I was still a kid, so may not be the experience an adult has.
Under twilight sedation I never go completely under and usually remember the whole thing, the last time it happened they said I had an unusually high tolerance to the medication. It was enough to keep me calm, but I was very much alert and so I just asked the surgeon to narrate what he was doing because it was honestly fascinating. All those experiences were for eye surgeries as an adult.
@zerbey@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's your pet peeve in your favorite video game?English3•2YIt’s Quake II, yes I’m old but they just remastered it and you should check it out. There’s a nice difficulty curve up until the last two levels, which are basically the easiest levels in the entire game. Seriously, the last boss which has been hyped up the entire game just stands in his corner shooting easy to dodge BFGs, and can be killed in about a minute, even faster if you use Quad damage.
@zerbey@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why do most people choose to use WhatsApp over telegram??English12•2YI know a handful of people on WhatsApp, a handful more on Signal, and a single person on Telegram who is a bit strange and thinks the world is a simulation (he’s a hoot). So, basically I don’t use Telegram at all because the only person I know on there isn’t someone I’d want to communicate with anyway.
@zerbey@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is an iconic catchphrase from your grandparents?English8•2YWhenever my Grandfather, a WWII combat veteran, saw something he didn’t approve of: “The things you see when they don’t let you carry a gun any more…”.
My other Grandfather didn’t really have any funny phrases, but my Nana when she didn’t approve of something would just use the “Well, that’s a how modern people do things I suppose”. It was really the only complaint she’d make, the only time I ever saw her lose her temper with someone was the day I got into a traffic accident and she had to be physically restrained from going after the driver for hurting her grandchild hahaha (I was the passenger).
@zerbey@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What do you guys spend your google opinion rewards credit on?English3•2YI have an iPhone so it goes to my PayPal balance, which I used to pay for a lot of different online subscriptions so it just goes into the pot. It’s $2 once every couple of months so I’m not exactly getting rich off it. When I had an Android I got a lot more surveys and I used it for premium features in Play Store apps.
Not quite the same, but my Sunday school teacher, who was also one of my parent’s best friends, was my secondary school English teacher. I was always nervous when I got a bad grade in my class, or stepped out of line he’d go tell them. To his credit, he never did, he also didn’t treat me any different to all the other kids in the class. When in church, he was back to being “parent’s friend mode”. Good guy, he was a mentor to me outside of school and I miss him.
