Cosmic does look really nice.
They’re making their own from scratch because modifying Gnome became too much of a pain. It’s got the same name, which is confusing.
This is probably why I had it in my head that they were doing the Vanilla thing, in that they are both departing from their long-standing fork.Yes, Cosmic, the fork of Gnome, is out. However, Cosmic, the ground-up rewrite, is still in development.
Cosmic is dead, long live Cosmic.
