“Dammit, my tape is stuck inside the VCR again!”
“99 cents for a song? Hell yeah. I’m never buying CDs again.” (A reference to the iTunes Music Store launch)
“I ran out of free AOL time. Better get another demo disc”
Speaking of AOL, “yo, what’s your AIM screenname?” (Replace “AIM” with your favorite messaging service at the time if you used that)
“Mom, can I have a PlayStation 2? -No. -But it plays DVDs.”
“Oh, I can’t wait to see the wonderful New York Twin Towers, I’m so excited for what’s coming!” (I was too young to even remember the concept of different countries existing so I had no idea what “America” even was, let alone being confused about 9/11)
“I got slimed. It was so. Much. Fun.”
“I’m so glad the United Kingdom won Eurovision, I can’t wait to see how the next year’s contest will turn out. Katrina was so amazing” (1997 was the last time the UK won)
“What a wonderful Saturday morning. Time to watch some cartoons.”
“My phone has a NiCd battery, and it’s almost out of juice so I can’t just plug it in because I will ruin the battery. I have to wait until it literally turns off.”
“Belgrade is the capital of Yugoslavia”
“Finally got my fresh new copy of Mac OS X. Time to see what’s it’s like.” proceeds to stay on OS 9 for a few more years
That’s all I can think of.
They literally acquired the Alien Blue client, which at the time was the best Reddit client according to many people, and used it as the base for their official client. How on earth did they fuck it up this badly??
I never used Apollo since I was stuck on Android. But I still wish I had the chance to use it while it was available.
I have a very similar experience, I only left because I noticed just how awful the website has turned by the time the API fiasco happened, and I was definitely getting a bit addicted to the website so leaving essentially made me combat this addiction. I haven’t logged into Lemmy for over a month. Yeah, it has definitely helped me cut down on social media usage.
Resol van Lemmyto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's changed about Lemmy over the past year for you?English5•3MGiven that this website has experienced the Reddit migration (I am one of those migrants), it has definitely started to feel a bit like Reddit, but it still differs in a lot of ways. There’s less bots, actually engaging conversations, actual content. To me, this website continues to capture the vibe of the early Web2 days of the internet in a way that Reddit clearly moved away from, definitely so that its executives can make more of them monies. It feels a bit nostalgic in a way, and that’s what I like about this website.
I browse Reddit anonymously nowadays on a web browser. I still absolutely hate the experience. It lags way too much, videos suddenly become “no longer available”, spend enough time and it will yell at you again for getting the app as if it didn’t when you first opened the site (at least it’s not as insistive as Instagram, an even worse website), that new logo reeks of Discord and Android having a baby, and not to mention, comments with a negative karma score are automatically hidden for whatever reason.
I only continue browsing that site to catch up with some communities with no real equivalent on Lemmy.
Resol van Lemmyto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are some popular criticisms you see about any show/movie/videogame that you strongly disagree or you just don’t think it’s really a bad thing?English4•6MHave you read the Wayside School books? I haven’t.
Have you watched the cartoon that was based off them? I actually have. And idk, I actually kinda liked it. To me, this is the fun type of “junk food cartoon”. A fun time waster if you will.
Maybe one day I’ll grab one of the books to really figure out if they’re that better than the cartoon adaptation. Maybe the latest one (Wayside School Beneath the Cloud of Doom) will wow me.
The Steam Deck exists. It runs Linux. It’s even an actual computer that you can plug a display, keyboard, and mouse into, and then gawk at the wonderful KDE Plasma desktop environment that this thing ships with. Sure, not all Steam games work on this thing, but you still have access to a lot of stuff.
But I suppose some folks will insist to install Windows on it, or get a Windows based alternative.
Resol van Lemmyto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•If you could create your own country, what would you name it?English5•9MI like to imagine an alternate universe where the Kaliningrad Oblast didn’t exist, and in its place was a 4th Baltic country, I call it Dooland (formal name: Republic of Dooland).
Their language, Doolish, is actually a Germanic language based on German, but simpler than even English, and doesn’t have any conjugation tenses or case system, and phonetics similar to Italian (yes, a Germanic language where the R makes the trill sound).
The flag is a horizontal tricolor, purple on top (yes, purple), blue in the middle, and green on the bottom, representing grasslands late at dusk in a starry night sky, where it’s usually pretty cold. Purple goes on the top because idk it looks better?
Cities include the capital, which I named Almara (don’t ask why), where a sandwich shaped like an ice cream cone is sold (unfortunately I stole this idea from Disney), however it’s not the biggest city, that title goes to Celestia (way nicer name), where the aurora borealis can be seen, usually next to a giant grass field which the flag is based on. It also houses a very popular music festival that doubles as its tourist attraction.
In terms of a national animal, I went with the koi fish. It has a very calm vibe if you ask me.
Seems like a fun country if it did exist.
Sad.
